Some games won’t support cloud saves through Switch Online to “ensure fair play”

Cloud saves will be part of Nintendo’s Switch Online service when it launches in later this month, but not all games will support the feature.

Nintendo has explained why some games won’t support cloud saves through Switch Online.

Games which do not support cloud saves include Splatoon 2, and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee. Nintendo said it has to do with “fair play.”

Game Informer noticed some games listed on the Nintendo website included the disclaimer “This game does not support Save Data Cloud backup.” One such title was Dark Souls Remastered, which is rather odd considering cloud saves are supported on other platforms.

After reaching out for comment, Nintendo told the site cloud saves for certain games “would make it possible to regain items that had been traded to other players.” It could also cause a game to “revert to a higher online multiplayer ranking that had been lost.”

Cloud saves in Splatoon, for example, could affect online multiplayer rankings, said Nintendo.

We’ve posted the disclaimer for you below, It was been zoomed and darkened for better viewing.

The vast majority of titles will, however, support cloud saves through Switch Online.

Nintendo was expected to discuss Switch Online during its Nintendo Direct presentation this week.

It was delayed due to the earthquake in Hokkaido, Japan. Reports state it has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 13 but Nintendo has yet to confirm a new date.

Nintendo Switch Online will run $3.99 per month, $7.99 quarterly, and $19.99 annually.
